Thanks untuk Multiply, salah satu tempat nongkrong asik buat hobiku ngumpulin lagu (MP3) berikut info dan terutama masyarakat yg satu selera. Lewat portal umum yg kumulai secara terlambat yakni tahun 2007 serta berumur singkat karena sejak 2010 gak aktif lagi, hanya 3 tahun tapi banyak hal berkesan. Diantaranya, koleksi MP3 yg telah kumuat (upload) berjumlah 700an lebih judul album yg dapat di ambil (download) oleh kalangan terbatas. Sebaliknya aku sudah mendapat banyak lagu termasuk album langka, kebanyakan "out of print" alias sudah tidak diproduksi lagi, biasanya dikonversi dari Piringan Hitam menjadi MP3 kemudian di upload ke Multiply masing2. Dan bukan hanya lagu, melainkan tukar menukar info, kisah termasuk cara mencari rekan baru untuk sebuah lagu yg spesifik dan langka. Bagi yg sepaham, bisa kebayang mendapat harta karun seluruh album Gentle Giant, Michael Quatro, Stomu Yamashta, Tangerine Dream yg seabreg maupun Eberhard Schoener nan selektif?
Format dan konsep Multiply sebetulnya lebih pas buatku ketimbang mailing list atau facebook, terutama lantaran fasilitas musiknya. Namun karena isu pembajakan lagu serta protes dari pihak royalti maupun artis, Multiply termasuk portal sejenis sudah mulai ketat apalagi fasilitas untuk mengunduh lagu lebih dipersulit. Kini popularitasnya makin menurun terutama kesibukanku yg gak memberi peluang untuk upload/download MP3, jika diberi kesempatan menyimak lagu rada serius adalah karunia terbesarku saat ini. Salah satu keasikan Multiply yg pernah jadi trend adalah mengenang album kompilasi rekaman Indonesia yg sudah jadi legenda seperti serial Dream Ekspres produksi Atlantic Record, Adult Contemporary Chart, Album Soundtrack Serial TV, dst. Salah satu "proyek" pribadiku adalah mengumpulkan materi album Jazz yg cukup berkesan dan pernah punya kasetnya, sementara materi lagunya bukan dari konversi kaset tapi dari PH demi kualitas tertentu.Thanks untuk Emiko "Emimyst" Miyashita di Tokyo, yg pernah memberikan lagu berjudul "Smile" milik The New Minstrels, bukan "Monserat" seperti tertulis pada sampul kaset Nada Dan Improvisasi tahun 1981 dgn instrumental berjudul "Senyum". Dari lagu inilah lantas jadi ide awalku buat mengumpulkan semua materi album kaset The Best Of Jazz Vocal produksi Aquarius tahun 1980, langsung dimulai. Beberapa lagu memang sudah pernah kukoleksi dalam format MP3, saat itu yg langka dan lama kucari adalah Silky (David Gates, album Falling In Love Again - 1979) dan What You Want Do For Love (Peabo Bryson, album We're the Best of Friends - 1979). Namun yg tersulit sekaligus paling akhir kudapat untuk menjadi kumplit adalah lagu Steal Away (Jim Photoglo, album Photoglo - 1980) kemudian yg berjudul I Need Your Love (Lonnie Smith, album Gotcha - 1978), sumbernya dari beberapa teman Multiply di Eropah khususnya yg berdomisili di Belanda.
Thanks juga buat "Kiaroskuro12" alias Nanette Maulid dari Filipina yg khusus menambahkan informasi tentang kelompok The New Minstreal. Tadinya aku gak tau jika kelompok ini kumpulan Pinoys, sampai Nanette memberi komentar, "You have The New Minstrels? Did you know they're a Filipino group? They're good. They are Filipinos. But sadly, they're not around anymore. I totally forgot about the song 'Smile' till I listened to your playlist. Thank you". Dia memberi info tentang group ini tapi gak tau tentang lagu Smile hehee .. The New Minstrels adalah kelompok panggung berawal dari tiga sahabat yg membentuk band di kampus tahun 70an, membawakan lagu Sergio Mendez. Kemudian masuk 4 vokalis wanita yg memperkaya wawasan mereka, mulai melayani lagu pesanan bergaya Ray Conniff maupun rada serius ala The Manhattan Transfer. Rombongan inipun rajin ikut kontes dan popular, akhirnya masuk rekaman dgn bendera The Minstrels. Akibat seringnya keluar masuk personil berganti formasi tapi selalu berkesan baru, menjadi The New Minstrels.
Konon kelompok ini pernah mampir pula ke Jakarta awal 80an saat band Filipina begitu merajai cafe dan hotel di Indonesia. Selain fasih membawakan karya berbahasa Inggris ditunjang entertaint menarik, mereka juga memperkenalkan karya sendiri. Salah satunya lagu "Smile" amat popular dan sering dibawakan Johan Oentoeng berduet dgn (klo gak salah) Nunung Wardiman, meski sedikit yg paham jika lagu itu dari band tetangga. Maka selain pernah "dipinjam" untuk direkam pada album Nada Dan Improvisasi edisi 1981, juga bebas masuk kompilasi The Best Of Jazz Vocal versi perekam (sekaligus pembajak) Indonesia yg memang berselara. Akhirnya, tentu thanks buat one and only my lovely Hannah, my partner in bed and arguing mate .. "SMILE"*: hello ;o)

What a superb collection of Jim's old stuff, "Steal Away". Jim Photoglo had some solo success in the late 1970s then he joined in the touring bands of Vince Gill, Andy Gibb, also Dan Fogelberg to name a few.
